Personal Project: Mastering CVS and publishing first Drupal module
I've spent the last couple of days starting a project that will be first in place here on this site regarding a full featured Drupal module that encompasses the functionality of the quote form.
Even after 10 years of development, my skills with CVS and distributed environment programming are somewhat lacking, and I'd really like to be able to start incorporating CVS into some of the projects I'm working on for version control. I now have a full version of the latest version of Zend Studio: Zend Studio for Eclipse. I've always been somewhat intimiated by the Zend Studio environment, as it's quite complex, and really, who wants to learn ANOTHER complicated piece of software?! I've tried out many versions of Zend Studio as far back as version 4, and have always turned away, and went back to my simple, easy to use & configure application, jEdit.
I spent about 6 hours last night really diving into Zend Studio, and trying to get a handle on a lot of the new features they've implemented, and was able to get a fair handle on it.
I set up a CVS Repository for the quoteform module, which will serve as my testing ground for CVS in general, familiarizing myself with the Zend Studio experience, and creating a proper Drupal module in a CVS environment. I also recieved notification from Drupal that my CVS account there had been approved, so once I've got a working version here, I will publish to the Drupal servers, and make the quote form the first official Drupal module that I've completed, and shared with the open source community.
I have completed a fair ammount of Drupal modules from very basic to quite advanced at this point, but all have been either modules that wouldn't really appear to useful to other Drupal developers, or were for private projects where open source development wouldn't apply. I do have another module for a jQuery license agreement that I will likely publish as well eventually, but it needs some feature adjustment, and administrative settings interfaces before it's ready to go, and it's really a back burner type of module that may or may not ever see the light of day.
This project, both the quoteform module, and CVS in general will be a learning experience for me, and will be ongoing for the next few weeks/month at the least.
My plan is to get a working BETA verison up and running quickly so that I can actually have the quote form working on this site in proper module implementation, and after that, I will delve into some of the more advanced features/settings, and add in the attraction that will attempt to make it a good plugin for many types of quote forms rather than a web development/design specific model like seen here.
Wish me luck...
