Idea: Drupal 6 Module: Ping This
UPDATE: This module has an official release thread here at himerus.com. Further comments should be submitted there.
I recently posted a quick review of the services at Ping.fm giving my glowing review for what little I had still had a chance to explore.
The service still requires a beta key, but I'd assume as well as it's working for me that they can't be too far from a full release to the public.
I'm going to be releasing a new Dupal 6 Module called PingThis. Ping This will be a two fold module from my initial ideas. It will be based on the idea of the ShareThis module for Drupal 6 that I also created. Using ShareThis, visitors to your Drupal site, as well as you can post links to popular social sites like Digg, Delicious, etc. PingThis will allow your users and you to post a link to the current page and info regarding the page to the Ping.fm service.
I have two sections to the module in mind at the moment:
- The primary or core feature of the module will be the most simplified version, adding a link & icon for Ping.fm to the links section of the posts of selected node types. Drupal admin would also be able to configure if to show it in teaser view or not.
This feature is described at Ping.fm here. - The second feature will be similar to the iGoogle widget for ping.fm. I see it being a block that allows users to insert a larger block on each page, or only pages of a certain node type.
The module seems fairly simple in idea, and I'm going to have to do some research into the Ping.fm API for the block section of the module. The basic feature won't require any special Application Key, or Developer API from Ping.fm, but the second, more advanced posting interface might.
More to come on this module as its code is more defined.

Interesting
I'd could see myself using something like this for my site. I'm currently your sharethis module as well.
As a side note, with the D6 Ping.FM module currently out, all my blog entries get posted to ping.fm. You may want to look into teaming up with them to add the additional functionality.
Still getting ideas...
From what I've seen of the current ping.fm module (http://drupal.org/project/pingfm), which I still have yet to get to work properly. (would like some documentation somewhere on this), it seems geared at the site owner to share the posts of a certain node type with Ping.fm to post elsewhere. (I've seen what look like your auto-posts on twitter).
I think ("think") that this module will be different as it's geared to the user visiting the page... And the more I look at the info located here (http://ping.fm/ref/help/), I think the features I want so far could be completely done without tying into the API, so a user wouldn't need to even input their Application Key to post. (It would redirect to Ping.fm), just like the ShareThis, or Service Links modules do.
More to come after I play with a quick version that should support the links in the "links" section of nodes.
Gotcha
I agree with with your assessment of documentation on this module. I was pretty much just winging it and eventually figured it out.
keep me posted on your progress x-D
