Drupal 6: First Impressions
I've really been impressed with Drupal 6 over the past week that I've been able to set it up and play with it a little both in testing phases, and for production sites.
I first installed it on a demo site just to check out the interface, and really dig into the core features without any custom modules installed. That lasted about a day before I was contracted on a Drupal project that was a simple content site, without the need for any modules, so Drupal 6 seemed like the easy choice to make, and was well received by the client.
That project is almost wrapped up, and ready to head out the door, and with the excitement of some of the new features on the administrative back-end, I decided as mentioned before that I'd decided to move the corporate site I'd been working on for Himerus Inc. to Drupal 6 rather than continuing to wade through customizations on CMDRpro, the in-house CMS I've been working on for the past 6 months. After getting the theme I had originally created for CMDRpro, which relies on the Smarty template engine converted to a Drupal theme, I've been able to start attempting to integrate some of the content, and start laying out a structure to the site so that I can have the new site ready for an official launch much sooner.
Overall, I HIGHLY recommend Drupal 6 for any serious developer that is interested in learning a system that is both highly customizable, and that has a large community of developers constantly working on custom modules and themes. This system is one that is sure to outlast many of its competitors and continue to be a staple in my repertoire for years to come.
