While D4D2010 - Boston is still a nice long way off in June of next year (exact dates, venue still TBD), Susan MacPhee and I among others are starting to put the wheels in motion to make this a great event, and top what was a fantastic start in 2009 to further grow the Drupal design community.
This time around we will be using the DrupalCamp L.A. model created by This by Them, and take some lessons that we've seen from DrupalCamp Montreal, and also the brand new DrupalCamp Austin site. We've seen some amazing work done recently on furthering the initiative of promoting Drupal camps and making them better and better, and we want to continue on that path. We also plan to use Acquia's free hosting for non-profit Drupal community websites.
In order to really promote this D4D2010 - Boston event, we want to be able to open up the design to the Drupal community, and allow all you amazing designers out there to submit a mockup design for the new D4D2010 - Boston site!
What we are looking for:
The goal is to have as many designers as possible submit their designs for the new D4D2010 - Boston site, and depending on the number of submissions we receive, pick out the top 5 designs or so, and then open up voting to the community to help us pick what design we move forward with.
The benefits of doing this will be great for the top designers highlighted with the best submissions. Each of the top 5 will receive mention & links throughout documentation on the setup of the new D4D2010 - Boston camp site. The winning designer will be highlighted in opening and closing ceremonies at the event, and receive a custom profile page for their personal or corporate data as a “special contributor” of sorts.
Submission Requirements:
- The design should be based on the 960.gsUsing either the 12 or 16 column layouts or a combination of both, or also the 24 column layout recently introduced in the 960gs package by Nathan Smith.
- Home page mockup at the minimumYour submission should be for the home page of the site, and include styling to accommodate for the layout of most of the generic elements that will be included in the site. If you have time to submit a home page design & internals (standard page/post & session browser, etc.) that would be great, but the home page design is all that is required to enter.
- Wireframes We were going to submit wireframes to follow, but rather than do that we would like to just let everyone be extremely creative. If you need examples of some awesome implementations, please visit the DrupalCamp L.A. site, and the DrupalCamp Austin site for ideas.
Be creative, be imaginative, and get busy to help support a great D4D2010 - Boston event!!!
Theming the winning design
Theming the winning design will be handled by the D4D2010 - Boston organizers, so you need not worry about that. Depending on the detail taken in your designs, some adjustments may have to be made to incorporate the theme properly into the DrupalCamp L.A. site structure. If you are only able to submit a single home page design that may not cover all the styling needs, we will take the greatest care when theming to hold true to your design concept.
Final thoughts:
This is just a rough draft of this contest idea, and some items are subject to change, and upon any changes, the community will be notified of those modifications. We'd like to put some sort of prize(s) into the contest as well, but cannot make any promises as of yet with the camp still quite a ways off. Just know that your efforts will not go unrewarded in the community!
